Thursday, April 29, 2004Comic Book Day
I love Wednesdays. Hump day. Also, new comic book day. Well not every Wednesday but most.
The smell of comic shops. All the different comics, trades, graphic novels, cards, toys, games, magazines, manga, and the like. MMM.....comics. Maybe I was meant to be a shop owner. I could hang out in the shop all day. I have a vision of the kind of shop I would like to own that would carry all the mainstream stuff but also select independents/alternative press comics as well. I might even retail good comics published out of people's homes with a copy machine. Not sure if they'd sell but it would be nice to give them a chance. I'd retail books. And have a great website with good ordering ability. The shop would have a catalog so vast collectors would come from miles around. I'd love to have a reading room too of some sort in it where meetings could be held: RPG games, book readings, etc. Another possibility: melding the idea of a coffee shop and a comic book shop together. Not much of a market for shops here in Akron now but you never know what the future could hold. Yesterday, I picked up the new issue of The Losers which as always was great. I also bought the last issue of Ministy of Space by Warren Ellis. The other two issues of it were published before I had even heard of Mr. Ellis. I can only say that the comic blew me away and I hope there is a sequel. Essentially, the premise of the story is that Britain won the space race years ago and has launched colony ships to Mars. Warren's alternate reality is so real you can taste it. I'll have to purchase the trade paper back when it comes out. Speaking of trades, Looking forward to the Orbiter trade due in mid-May. Also outlining an idea for another scifi graphic novel. The book tentative titled Hallowed is about a religious group who is sent in a cryogenic equipped Star Ship to terraform and colonize a world that is seventy five years from Earth. The only problem: when they arrive it's already been colonized by human 'warlords' who arrived fifteen years prior because Jump Ships were invented that travel at light speed. The War Lords aren't leaving. And after they enslave the New Comers they plan to conquer the rest of human space. Decided I will begin to write out all these different ideas I have for comics and what not. Doesn't matter if I can write a complete script. I think more will come to me as I give life to the pieces- parts in my head. What comics are you reading currently? Which ones do you recommend? I am reading The Losers, Y the Last Man, Bite Club, and most of Warren Ellis's material. Also collecting the trades of Transmetropolitan and The Sandman. I'd like to start reading a super hero book again too. Not sure which one. It has to be good. Can someone recommend one of those? Believe it or not, I miss those types of stories from my youth. Something where the good guy wins in the end but the story isn't some old crap cliche. -posted by Nobius 10:16 AM #
